August 10, 2004 Well, as far as parties getting broken up, there was my bday party in march. It was like 12:10 or something but it was a thursday ngiht and they basically just walked in our house kicked everyone out and left. And I asked them how they could just walk in but they said that "no one claimed residency here outside so we didn't know if these people were robbing the place or what...yada yada" Whatever. Then last night actually my friend got arrested next door to my house. I was there and they just walked in the backyard of this house. But I don't know why they even arrested him... i'll let you know when i get more details.

Time Line Sept 2002 – June 2004 Two years in IV with no prior court history or record. The only tickets I received were traffic, or parking tickets. I lived on my own in Los Angeles, I know and understand my rights. Once coming to IV the IVFP began to mess with my record, like they are and have done to many in the past. The IVFP have been accused of mistreatment and are currently under investigation. The fall defensive and the “nexus” the schools paper, allowed students to come forth and tell about the horror the IVFP have caused college students. My first encounter with the IVFP was Monday October 7th 2002. The county wanted to block off the Isla Vista streets and place “islands” on each street, claiming to glorify IV. What they didn’t realize or care for was the fact that this would cause 6 losses of parking spots where each island would be put. On Sabado Tarde the street where I lived the County outlined where the island would actually be. The neighbors and I all gathered in the front street and placed our couch where the lines were drawn. We protested very respectfully, got signatures from the residents, the TV news came down as well as the Nexus UCSBs newspaper. The next day the County cancelled the IV islands. I’m actually on the front page of the nexus Tuesday October 8th 2002, getting a signature from a fellow Isla Vistan. http://www.ucsbdailynexus.com/news/2002/3512.html First noise violation (02-16503) was Sat November 2nd 2002, IVFP claimed that there was music on, and due to the Halloween weekend there was an absolute NO music tolerated at all. I had just began school and I had no idea that we couldn’t have ANY music on at all. That was my first actual violation and 2nd noted encounter. Deputy G. Moore #2719 wrote the citation, he circled sex M and wrote a W (white? He never asked me my race) next to it. Then asked me for my Social Security number whereas I refused and he wrote that on the citation. During this period, one of the roommates where I lived received a citation for the same noise ordinance violation. He went to shut the door whereas the officer put his foot in the door. The same thing would happen to me at a later time. The roommates name is Denis K. DKAG21@hotmail.com feel free to contact him, he is familiar with the IVFP incidences. Also during this time on a separate occasion, the IVFP came by our house; no one claimed responsibility for living there and the IVFP actually cut the speaker wires to our speakers outside. My second noise violation (03-11442) was in Feb. 2003. The officers approached my home and said that the music was on too loud; of course we had no idea what was too loud. The officer said it couldn’t be audible over 100 feet. It was definitely not loud and unreasonable, as the ordinance states 40-2 on the IVFP website, nowhere does it talk about 100 feet, but on most of my citations they IVFP put audible over 100 feet. http://www.sbsheriff.org/iv/ls/index.html Here is where I felt as if our house was “red flagged”. I felt that way because the officer said that there was a complaint by the neighbors where I asked to see it and he mentioned that if I bring it out it will be over a 700 dollar fine. So don’t push me and take the citation. I responded that I have no choice but please don’t make an accusation that someone called in without any bearing. At this point I began making contact with both Police departments. I approached Sergeant Mark Signa at the UCSB campus police station on Mesa Rd. with concerns about this ongoing situation. I had previous contact with him regarding motorized scooters on campus earlier in the school year. I questioned the ordinance because it wasn’t that we could not have any music after midnight on the weekends rather the decibel level had to be not heard over 100 feet. Plus the IVFP website never stated the 100 feet limit, so we as the cited residents want explanation and to understand. No radar or device could detect it, so I wondered what to do. He said to contact the IVFP and try to work with them. I went into the IVFP station on Pardal asking them about the noise violation ordinance, “loud and unreasonable” which it wasn’t we used computer speakers. They basically said to try and measure the distance of the 100 feet to your house. I did, but to no avail, I received more citations, each time lowering the music. The next encounter was the strongest I feel. It involved Sandra Brown and it was the first time I ever had been in contact with her. She completely disregarded our constitutional rights, and used her power to force her entry to my home. It was the Illegal search and seizure case # 1106846. On Saturday July 12th 2003, I witnessed Dept Sandra Brown #2680 exit my apt with Dept Dorsey #2559. They preformed an Illegal search and seizure, claiming PC or probable cause allowing them to search the home, they found illegal substances, and I was brought to the IVFP office. I was allowed to leave if I were to comply and be a “snitch” for them. As soon as I arrived back to my apartment I started gathering my information for court. She claimed that I allowed her in the house, that she had permission, which wasn’t true. However that didn’t even matter and Judge Ochoa dropped the case. Basically the plain view clause didn’t allow the deputies to enter the home, just to go and get a warrant. She and Dorsey both entered before anyone even “let them in”. This is where I believe the real harassment began. FYI I spoke to Sergeant Mark Signa and Lt McKinney at the IVFP, both giving me advice but not really helping resolve this community issue. Three weeks later August 2nd Officer Santiago #3445, Dept Dorsey #2559 and another Dept all approached my house. My little brother was in town for the weekend, I was in summer session. We had a small gathering in the front yard, and the music again was “amplified over 100 feet or loud and unreasonable”. Officer Santiago approached me and asked for my license, I handed it to him. He said go and turn the music off, whereas I walked inside my home closing the door behind me, he placed his foot in the door. I said please don’t come inside, this time being way more stern about him entering. He said, “I’m coming in” and pushed his way inside the home. He said that PC (probable cause) allowed him to confiscate any stereo and even my computer. He waved his flashlights like the Gestapo all over my room. My little brother who was asleep in my room was awakened by the police’s entry into my room. Once again cited (03-11826) and once again contacted the IVFP and Sergeant Signa trying to resolve any issue with this. He mentioned to lower it again, and didn’t involve himself again. Here’s where I went into the IVFP giving them (Pam and others) my personal phone number hoping that they’d call if there was a disturbance or a complaint at the home. I actually let them know when our next party was going to be held on and if there was a problem to please contact us. We stuck our neck out to try and cooperate with the IVFP. I told the IVFP that we were going to have a mardi-gras party to please contact if there was any problem. Colin L. colinl@umail.ucsb.edu another roommate got a citation in the mean time. A violation for the noise ordinance, he was in some of the pictures I sent to you earlier. On Feb 22nd Officer Coyle #3276 and Dept Dorsey #2559 cited us for loud music. The noise ordinance was the citation (04-2848). This ordinance was and still is extremely vague and up to the officers discretion hence why I made contact with the officers prior to try and resolve the problem without a ticket. That didn’t work. Didn’t learn my lesson, I approached the IVFP and left my contact info again 3 months later for a pre-graduation bash. Here’s where we surrounded the whole back yard with tarps. We had people who helped with the making of the party monitor the wristbands and entry. 10:30pm about 7 officers led by Sandra Brown #2680 disregarded the tarps and ran into the party. Looking for people with cups in there hands. They usually use the excuse that they saw someone running into the party off the street with a cup of beer and they followed him/her into the party. Here they didn’t say a thing. Allegedly they found one kid with a cup in his hand and asked for his ID where he wasn’t 21 and was cited. They then saw a girl with a cup in her hand and cited her for a MIP. Note, neither the girl or boy had a wristband, nor does anyone have any solid proof the beer was given to him or her from our house. Sandra then came to me and asked for my license and called her partners to take our kegs. The full kegs. These kegs were hidden from the public street and like Mark Signa and other officers stated they couldn’t be in view from the street, however the cops here disregarded any barriers and went in the party. June 11th is the night of our Graduation party, we again tarped the property off and did not allow anyone under 21 accesses to alcohol. Sandra Brown came in again asking for Ids, now at this point you cannot do a thing. She has all the power and began citing people. I followed her around our property until she left. At approx 2:30 am she and 4 other officers and deputies came back on the property because the graduates were still hanging out, mind you that’s not illegal, and the music was completely off. So there was no reason for what was about to happen. I was in my room where knocking on the door was happening. My roommate wanted me outside, where I asked why he said the police want to talk to you. I told him that I was in bed and I didn’t want to speak to them. They were asking where Mr. “Dickel” was, Mike M. ziggy411822003@yahoo.com and Colin L. colinl@umail.ucsb.edu and Jeremy W. woodywoods@umail.ucsb.edu all witnesses to the incident. About 5 minutes after that the power was shut off. I quickly got out of bed and went to the breaker where I asked why did you guys shut our power off? The officer in Black said because you didn’t want to come out! I got my camera out and began taking pictures. Sandra Brown said that I would be arrested because I was interfering with her work. They began emptying our keg from the tap, causing water damage and breakage to our front deck. One officer I personally saw knock a beer cup right out of a graduates hand, on private property, it was so childish it was amazing. The pictures I sent earlier are all self-explanatory. Let me know if you have them all. The citations we received were all without a proper measuring device. Like radar gun is to a speeding ticket, what is used for measuring the distance of the music and its level? You must understand that I was TOTALLY respectful to all the officers when they were citing me. Never acting as a fool or putting them down, I was always trying to communicate with the Police. We lived in IV and they worked there, I tried to be in harmony with them. I’m sure this looks like a constant nuisance in the neighborhood, but we NEVER had any fights, any thefts, any rapes, any damage, any couch fires, any stabbings or shootings, any gang violence, and not even any certified complaints arose from the parties at our home. I had called Pam at the IVFP a few times to report vandalism and fights I personally viewed in the neighborhood. I was a citizen on patrol, on watch for Isla Vista, I was unappreciated just targeted as a scapegoat, and when I didn’t want to be a snitch that’s when they began targeting others and me at the house. There is a lot of evidence of harassment in my case as well as many others. Please visit www.gloriasafterdark.com and check out the message board for more proof of the name-calling and harassment by the IVFP and its’ affiliates. Sincerely, JohnnyD@GloriasAfterDark.com

On the night of Friday, Sept. 24, I was arrested for giving false information to an Isla Vista Foot Patrol officer. My eyes were opened to the corrupt, inappropriate and unprofessional ways of the IVFP that night. While my three roommates were dancing with friends and enjoying themselves toward the front of the house, I was in my bedroom with my boyfriend. I hadn’t seen him for three weeks, and he was visiting from Fullerton for the weekend. I woke up to a thud on my door, which I presumed was an inebriated roommate. “Karen!” they yelled piercingly, frantically pleading that I, the sober one, talk to the police officers who had interrupted their good time. As I staggered to the living room in my pajamas, I was approached by a male officer who assumed I lived there due to my homely attire. He began talking to me and asking me questions about whether I knew that minors were being served alcohol. I pleaded ignorance but said I would take responsibility for the activities at my house. He asked for my first and last names and my date of birth. After he wrote my name, spelled incorrectly, into his notebook, I asked him if I could write it myself, because the hustle and bustle was making it difficult to spell aloud one letter at a time. He handed me the notepad, I tore out the top sheet with the misspelled name on it, and with this action he arrested me, claming that I had battered him by ripping a 3-by-5 page out of his notebook. He cuffed me and sat me down on the curb, then hovered over me condescendingly. Instead of reading me my rights, which I assume had slipped his mind, he reassured me that my actions were by far “the stupidest and worst thing” he had ever seen. I compliantly sat in peace and let him finish his power trip, but I couldn’t help but wonder to myself if physical violence - i.e. punching or pulling a weapon or even talking back - wouldn’t be stupider or worse? Was this really the stupidest and worst thing he had ever seen? I ignorantly tore a piece of paper that I decided had irrelevant information on it. Perhaps he had just moved up to being a foot patrol officer from the local Santa Barbara preliminary school facilities - with all the ripping, pasting and coloring going on there, one would think he would be accustomed to my behavior. As I, a single, compliant 19-year-old sober female with no intentions of being destructive, sat quietly on the curb, I looked up to a soccer team of police officers. Mind you, I later found out that while the police officers were waiting on the sidelines to star in the game, a good friend’s house three addresses down was robbed. It was a good call by the officers to radio in the extra substitutes for backup, just in case someone’s legs fell asleep while they hovered. They placed me in the back seat of the cop car as the criminal that I was, shut the door and drove me away with “shame” written on my forehead with chalk. I would have to say the most disturbing thing was not the prospect of going to jail, but the car ride over; I was sitting next to a male freshman who told me “everything would be fine.” He slurred his words and described how he didn’t do anything except “piss all over the street” because he “had to go.” I calmly told him he was an idiot, and then we both kept to ourselves for the remainder of the ride. The most disturbing part came not from the back seat, but the front. As the car sped up and slowed down, I overheard the two male officers in the front discussing which of the girls were the hottest. As we drove past one girl wearing a white halter top and a short black skirt with platforms, we slowed down almost to her walking pace. Then I heard the officer in the passenger seat say, “Wow, she is a good one, very hot.” From that moment on, my stomach felt uneasy, and all my presumptions about the Isla Vista Foot Patrol were unfortunately confirmed. Just wanted to let others know. Karen Merritt is a UCSB student.

Thanks eric for the post. You know all this mess regarding the community and her "protectors" has sparked an my interest in learning more about the anti-war protesting of the early '70s. did you guys know that the LA sheriffs department sent up their "tactical squad" up to SB and along with SB police were roaming the streets of IV gaining entrance to homes, harassing and abusing many students? unbelievable, but i truly can see a however smaller, unfair, uncivil, resemblance to the problems students now are facing on a daily basis. Check out www.islavistahistory.com there is lots to learn from history, and by learning we will not let it be repeated or forgotten. Monday nights on campus there are meetings with regards to the IVFP and students, for more info check out the AS student lobby and help the Fall Defensive continue year-round. Then they publish the questionable acts in a newsletter so anyone can read the names and see the pictures of the officers involved.

In response to the Concerned Parent: **I also have a great deal of respect for the law, as my father and numerous family members currently work in law enforcement. However, what I do not have respect for are the gross violation of people's rights. It sounded like the IVFP did the right thing in the case of your daughter, considering she could not stand or walk, and did not know where she was. There are many instances where the IVFP did not have reasonable suspicion for an arrest or search but conducted one anyway. We are fighting to build a safer community, where local authorities are fulfilling their duties and protecting students, rather than giving them unwarranted criminal records. The problem we have are the tactics used by officers while making arrests, their targets, and their immense lack of respect for Isla Vista Residents. I also applaud the IVFP for arresting those who pose a threat or harm to other members of the community. Our attempts are not to assist criminals, we are attempting to create a safe place where students, police, and community members can target the real problems we have in I.V. through effective and collaborative efforts. In the majority of instances, outside of your overtly belligerent daughter, targeting women for their "own safety" should NOT consist of a night in Jail. Officers spend more time and tax payers money detaining, questioning, and arresting these young women, rather than walking them home, or calling a CSO to do so. There is much to work out, and Isla Vista residents need to work together on this issue, and speak out! I've seen to many nights where five IVFP officers are chatting' it up on a corner somewhere, I don't think some complaint forms are going to impinge on their "job duties."

Parent we are not saying that the IVFP are always making false arrests, however you must see these depts on their high horses in action. Most students respectfully take their ticket without a grudge but when the IVFP begins to return to the same house, over and over even though there has never been a problem or phone call of fighting, vandalizing, puking on the street, never had a problem of a dui or anything other than just having a weekend college party, thats when we as SB students are fed up and start to take a stand, I'm sure you have dealt with the common intoxicated citizen, im sure you know that you must arrest the person if he is belligerent. im am also sure that you dont go looking for a kid who maybe had a few beers, WALKING home, not driving but walking. im sure if you daughter had a house party and their was drinking, you wouldn't wait till the guests left with you arms crossed by your patrol car, busting everyone who may have missed a step on the stairs down to the street. and at the same time make fun of them and put them down. thats how we feel, we feel that we are constantly harassed, and that is our feelings, b/c we live it, we dont think that the IVFP should be closed down, we just want a few bad apples to be rooted out. im glad to hear that your daughters doing fine, have her post her story, we'd love to hear what went down in her eyes. Thank you for the post & stay safe.

Wow, my daughter told me about this website's message board. She, too, is a UCSB student. First of all, I am a 25 year veteran of a police agency south of you guys. I have two daughters, 16 & 19. On Halloween weekend, I got a phone call from my 19 year old daughter's roommate. She had been arrested for 647f (drunk in public). After my own inquiry, I found out she was half naked, making out with a guy she didn't know in between two apartment buildings on Del Playa. When deputies contacted her and her unknown friend, who was also arrested for 647f, she had no idea where she was, who she was kissing, or how far she had gone with the guy. Long story short, she was too drunk to be in public and was unable to care for herself. After I calmed down, I drove to the county jail and picked her up after she was sober enough to walk on her own. I am so glad that she was arrested for being drunk in public. Her spending the night in jail was probably the only thing that kept my daughter from having sex with some total stranger who could be HIV positive or whatever hellish STD's are out there. Now, let me tell you what I think about what is going on in IV. If the deputies are truly violating your rights, file a complaint. However, if you are filing complaints over every little contact, or MIP ticket, you are only bogging down the system and not coming up with a true solution. Our country has a set of laws that must be enforced. Law enforcement personnel are only doing their jobs. Before you file that complaint for the MIP or an officer gaining access to your home with or without your consent, do a little research before filling out that complaint form. If the complaint is valid, proper steps will be taken. If the complaint is just because you're upset about a ticket or your friend was taken to jail, for what you think is no apparent reason, think twice before submitting that form. Let the officers in your community do their job without flooding their office with bogus complaints. I know people are going to comment about my posting here. Let me tell you, I don't plan on replying to any postings. If any SBSD deputies are reading this, thank you for saving my daughter that evening.

Well great news!!! The students are taking some action, im so excited for everyone. Even-though i did graduate, i personally must go back to court and fight a ticket, which i feel was engulfed with IVFP harassment. thats neither here nor there though. Please seriously look at the complaint form, fill it out, remember that the night or day in question needs to be documented. if you were watching abuse taking place, you can file a complaint as well. it did affect you too! now is the time for change, root the bad apples from the IVFP, im sure there was a time when the IVFP station was a place to go for q's, or to chat. i know from my experience that there are great members in the IVFP, and that it CAN be a community respected icon, but one bad apple spoils the rest. please take a look at the nexus article, post your comments on the board we want to know your thoughts! our voice is going to be heard. congrads! aiight, I was walking my friend home last night and I was basically taking care of her. She wasn't puking all over the place or anything like that, just holding her by the waist and holding her up. No major swaying tho...we're passing by some cops and the fuckers pull her from me and arrest her. This was so unnecessary...I was probably more fucked up than her. They were pulling the whole shit like "yea, there are a lot of girl being taken advantage of, this is for her safety" and shit like that...rediculous shit aiight. I was like officer we just left a party from across the street, this here is a friend of mine and she's my roommie's best friend and I can bring out like ten people who will be able to take care of her if you think I'm seriously out to take advantage of this girl. After that I was trying to find out information about how I can get her out or where I pick her up, just wanted to get answers. The fucking cop that was on his power trip, I've never seen that asshole in iv before either, the fucker wears glasses and has a hitler mustache, he just comes up to me while i'm talking to a different officer and fucking screams at me "you have ten seconds to leave or you're getting arrested!" What I don't understand is what the fuck would be arrested for?? You mutherfuckers arrested my friend for no good reason and now I can't even ask questions? What is this shit? Where is the service?

So we had our first encounter with the law tonight. So we had some people over here, and soem of us were standing outside. We see the cops coming up and one person drops their cup of beer on the ground hoping to remove any evidence. Cop walks up to him and starts yelling at him to pick up his cup. Of course the kid interprets this as a command, when in truth it was really just a question, asked in an aggressive way. Of course he gets scared by the cop and picks up his cup. Now he gets carted away for an MIP. Kids, the police will try to enforce bogus laws via their power trips. Don't believe everythign they say. Anyways, apparently they caught some people out on the street for MIPs. Three other people, plus our new MIP equals four violations which makes guilty as a nuissance house. So they come up and start writing us a ticket for this. Halfway through, someone inside the house tries to come outside, sees the cops, then decides against it and doesn't close the door. One of the officers sees this as a open door and decides to begin investigating. I realize this is bullshit for him to do that, so i run ahead of him and shut the door and block the way and tell him he would be trespassing. He gets pissed off and starts yelling at me because I actually knew a few of my rights, that they can't just roll into our house without a warrant. My actions saved our house a VERY big ticket. Don't be affraid to go out and risk your ass to protect yourself against an injustice. This experience ruined my entire halloween night because I was so angry by their attempts to fuck us over. And the whole time when i was trying to ask what the grounds for our violations were, they would begin yelling at me, which wasn't fair, because I believe I was completely entitled to answers.

Nosmo, you must have your friend go into the IVFP station in IV and file a complaint. Do not let them discourage you once you guys are there. Ask to speak to the Lt. if he is not in, make an appointment. Don't tell the Deputies why you are there as they will probably pull the run around. Please have your friend post the whole story on this site as we are currently working with the SB Public Defenders office and pursuing a Civil Suit against the IVFP and its' Deputies (side note Deputies wear beige, Officers wear black). Have your friend check his citation and see who the Police Officer was, get her name, and then file the complaint. Listen Nosmo, your friend was in the wrong for not telling his name, that is a must, now if he felt discriminated b/c the Officer approached him and he "wasn't drinking", or he was physically abused, and mistreated, (he's not alone) then he needs to file a complaint, stating the situation. By not cooperating with the officer, he pissed her off and she mis/used her "power" and took him in. You must try and cooperate with the IVFP and other Officers , don't give them an excuse to F- with you, cuz you know they will. Make sure to know your rights, and don't let them push you around, I sure as hell didn't. You can ask any one of the IVFP members, I was totally respectful, but I wasn't intimidated b/c they went thru some training and some classes and received a badge to hide behind. Thanks for the post, and if you need some more info or you want to know where GAD is going with this E-mail me directly. Good Luck!

Then this other cops, a short little Asian girl, grabs his arm and throws him down!!!!! It was almost funny except they dragged him off to jail. I thought this was a free country. What do I have to tell a cop when he's harassing me? Why can some cop bitch beat on you for no reason? Did anyone else get put in jail for just minding thier business? I thought cops had to be like 21 or somthing cause this girl cop looked like she was 12.

Halloween dream, where did you get the sill idea that an officer cannont approach you unless you commit a crime? Have you ever heard of the term "consentual contact?" An officer can come up and talk to just about anybody he wants to. It is not discrimination unless he contacts you because of your race, color, creed, sexual orientation, the way you dress, your walk or silly Halloween constume. So, technically.... No, there is no technicality about it. You're just plain wrong. However, I'm glad you urge people to be respectful to the people working the streets.

for your info, God's Disciple, to put it into your own context, the cops are the game, it's only a one way street for them, so yea, we do hate the game. About the signs...if this is to be effective it needs to be organized. I don't think everyone should necessarily have a sign that says "fuck the police" but every house should have something that shows our dissatisfaction with the way things are done in iv today. "IT'S OUR IV!" "give us service that WE want!" We are being raped out of our freedom. "FUCK ABC" We are not alcoholics, and even if we fucking were alcoholics, a fucking arrest, MIP, or DIP is NOT something that will get someone back on track in life, it only fucks you up deeper in that hole. These signs need to be thought out for the best effect and they all need to go up on the same day. Anyone has ideas about this, lets get it started. If you know people who live on DP or even anywhere else in IV, start telling them about this, see what they think and if they would be down to have their voices heard. The more people join us, the better effect it will have.

every house should hang banners outside that say how they really feel about the "law" enforcement. We want to send these people without a soul a message right? I'd think it's the first reasonable step. If there would be a few houses that do that then surely the ivfp bastards would drink coffee and donuts at those locations day and night and jump at any opportunity they can to fuck people over. If every single house puts some kind of a sign up then we're all in this together and we have a fucking voice. Lets make it clear that the cops and even more importantly their shitty services to the community are not welcomed and absolutely not admired. They are public servants. Serve the fucking community even if we do like to forget about the life draining school and exams just for a few friggin hours! If you can't handle looking at us as no more than completely shit for brains fuck ups then maybe you shouldn't be "serving" this particular community. We need cops that are there when you need them. We need cops that respect the people who live here. We need cops that are tailored for this community. What we have now is absolutely the opposite and it is getting worse. What these fucking cops are doing here is forcing people to develop an absolutely negative perspective of law enforcement everywhere. People who live here are from all kinds of places, and when they are done with school they will take all that shitty experience back to their towns and will never have respect for their community's law enforcement - all because of these pigs here! Throughout the three years that I've had at ucsb there was absolutely nothing positive that the cops did for me or anybody else. It doesn't take much to figure out that they're on a power trip and just want to fuck with people, get noticed...it's rediculous, people who work in ivfp should be ashamed...maybe that's why we have no good cops there, all the respectable police officers probably don't wanna work there, if I was one, I wouldn't wanna fucking work with these losers. We need new fucking cops! Cops that do absolutely everything to serve US, THE COMMUNITY. Give us what we fucking want!!!!!!!!! We pay your mutherfucking salaries! If we weren't here your asses would be broke or sucking dick in gay porn!! Fuck I'm pissed! Hey Alchy, first of all I didn't have a bubble to burst in the first place so don't be stupid. I have many reasons to believe that you are Sandra Brown, and they're not reasons like oh she doesn't have a life, even though brown most likely doesn't have a life...if you are sandra brown, i could care less, just shame on you you bastard, and if you're not, then shame on you for supporting her. SERIOUSLY. W H A T T H E F U C K !!!!!! Get A LIFE!! Do you think you'll ever be able to "curb" college drinking and partying?!?!?!? I didn't think so. So why waste your time. Traditionally, the police are supposed to be friends with their community.....IV has evolved to the point where the entire student population is not only in fear of their police, but also rebelling against them. Pretty soon something might have to be burned down (as was the case in the 70s with the burning of the Bank of America), and frankly, I would have no problem in participating in it as long is it got the voice of the students heard. Sound fucked up huh? Well that's the mind set the police have driven me (and most other students) to. In other words, we're sick of being fucked over. The way it should work, is the IVFP should just stay inside their station and sit on their little asses until they actually get a call from somebody or a complaint. Until something really goes wrong, shit, leave us alone.

This is rediculous! They are not serving the community in any way at all...they are never there when they're actually needed. how could that be? well maybe 'cause they're looking for the wrong things! Seriously, if there's anything we can do to have our IV back, the way it was in the past and the way it should be, I'll give my heart and soul for the cause. Any ideas? So we were having a party at our house a few weeks ago and we forgot to turn off the music before midnight. So its like 12:10 and I see the police walking up and realize our audible mistake. I quickly turn the music off and shut the front door in hopes that they will forgive us and let us off. Then I hear banging at the door from the police, so i open it, only to experience the arm of officer Hudley reach inside of my house and grab me by my shirt collar and pull me out of my house ripping my necklace in the process. Then he makes me degrade myself even further by making me sit on the ground outside my house in front of everyone. Now I would not be so pissed off if he had just nicely asked me to step out of my house to give me a noise citation. It is outright illegal for any part of their body to enter my house without a warrant and then on top of that to physically contact me. I plan to press charges against the police as soon as i find a lawyer, in hopes of showing the crooked ivfp that we are not kids who they can push around. Who's with me?

Alcohol, your own article provides a quote that pretty much sums up what many of us here in IV feel is happening: "Shouldn't colleges crack down on alcohol consumption?" asks Sheldon Steinbach, ACE's general counsel. "They could. But you would be turning the college into a quasi-police state and impairing their ability to grow up." Many of us here feel that this place is turning into a police state, because everyone is now viewed as guilty until proven innocent. And unfortunately, it takes time and money to proven innocent on something small such as a MIP so it is often not even worth it. And yes, it is sad that people have died from drinking. I don't think anyone out here is going to contend that those are tragic cases. However, it is stated that one person consumed 40 beers and shots in one night. 40 Beers!? That's a ridiculous amount of alcohol. And while her friends should have known better, unfortunately they did not, and perhaps they didnt call the police or paramedics because they were afraid of getting in trouble themselves. Inexcusable in itself, but it still helps to show part of the problem. Working with students, no against them, is the only way to bridge the gap between the IVFP and students.

By Robert Davis, USA TODAY This month has been deadly for binge-drinking college students. Five underclassmen in four states appear to have drunk themselves to death, police say, after friends sent their pals to bed assuming that they would "sleep it off." Some college presidents are promising to crack down on underage drinking - four of the students were too young to drink legally. Others have shut down fraternity houses where bodies were found. But one expert calls those moves too little, too late. "It's locking the barn door after the horse has been stolen," says Henry Wechsler, a Harvard University researcher who has studied campus drinking. He says schools with weak enforcement of drinking rules put students at greater risk. "The schools that have the greatest problems take the easiest solutions," he says. "They have educational programs and re-motivation programs. But they don't try to change the system. These deaths are just the tip of the iceberg." In some college towns, drink specials at bars and loose enforcement of liquor laws make it easier and cheaper for students to get drunk than to go to a movie, Wechsler says. The result, research suggests, is 1,400 student deaths a year, including alcohol-related falls and car crashes. "Some schools enforce," he says. "But others have a 'don't ask, don't tell' policy. It's a wink." Others say schools can't stop a young adult who chooses to drink. Drinking problems start in high school and are simply let loose in college, says the American Council on Education, a Washington-based advocacy group that represents about 1,800 colleges and universities. "Shouldn't colleges crack down on alcohol consumption?" asks Sheldon Steinbach, ACE's general counsel. "They could. But you would be turning the college into a quasi-police state and impairing their ability to grow up." All of these students, last seen drinking heavily, were found dead: • Samantha Spady, 19, of Beatrice, Neb., was found Sept. 5 in a Colorado State University fraternity. • Lynn Gordon Bailey Jr., 18, of Dallas, was found Sept. 17 at a University of Colorado fraternity house. • Thomas Ryan Hauser, 23, a junior from Springfield, Va., was found Sept. 19 in his apartment near Virginia Tech. • Blake Adam Hammontree, 19, of Medford, Okla., was found Sept. 30 in a fraternity house at the University of Oklahoma. • Bradley Barrett Kemp, 20, of McGehee, Ark., was found at home Saturday at the University of Arkansas. The official cause of death has not been determined for the three most recent cases. Colleges with large Greek systems and big, highly competitive intercollegiate athletic programs have the highest rates of student binge drinking, Wechsler says. "There is a culture of drinking on campuses that must change," says Patty Spady, Samantha's mother. "People put her in a room thinking that she would sleep it off." But chug too many drinks - Samantha is said to have consumed up to 40 beers or shots of vodka the night she died - and the blood alcohol level continues to rise even after a person passes out. Alcohol kills when the person is too intoxicated to maintain his own airway. He then suffocates on his own vomit or on an otherwise harmless obstruction, such as a pillow. "These kids don't know this," says Spady, who set up a foundation (SAMspadyfoundation.org) to find ways to prevent deaths on campus. "Drunks cannot take care of drunks." Spady urges students to "stay sober to take care of your friends."

This message board is such a nice avenue for me to hopefully partake some information to the residents of IV. Great story UC, but pretty sad on the part of the law enforcement. ill tell you i have had similar run-ins with the IVFP most of the deputies feel as if us college students just shot someone. the mistreatment is ridiculous, and terribly unfair. as a matter of fact i have had IVFP officers call me names, stereotype me and my guests, and has shown a blatant disregard for IV citizens/human rights. they have entered my home illegally countless times, they have cut my speakers, they have shut our power off to the apt complex, threatened arrest when all we wanted to do was find out why they are running up in a private party, the list goes on and on, but with more people telling their stories we can make a change. Spread the word and lets get as many stories as we can out there. try to leave an email address so we can inform you about the recent updates with the harassment. Thank You - Johnny D

That is not like you to drop an argument, ive seen you here before and you fight these things til the bitter end like someone with no life does. Ah, the the pompous views of the elitist. Alcohol, you critisize the inhabitants of Isla Vista as drunken idiots, but unfortunately for you, these drunken idiots are citizens of the United States, and are therefore enabled the right to complain and be treated in a fair manner. The problem right now with the IVFP is that there is absolutley no rapport between them and the students. And how could there be right now? All students see and hear are very questionable arrests, and no one gets to see any of the positives that the IVFP may do. I mean, when you read that someone was giving a MIP for picking up empty beer bottles, what kind of message does that send. The problem of having a zero tolerance policy is that it leaves no room for common sense, or benefit of the doubt. It automatically means that you are proven guilty, regardless of the circumstances, as unfortunately witnessed by the poor kid who got the MIP for trying to clean up the place. And you claim that the youth of America have a skewed view of the world, maybe if you would come down from your pedastal for a moment you could try to understand what was going on. I'm not one to normally complain about the police and the government, but even I have noticed that things are getting out of hand, and Isla Vista is subject to laws which take away common sense and reason. (No kegs in view of the street? I'm sorry, but sometimes the best place for a keg is out on the balcony, where it won't get the floors dirty, or outside. It's just the best way for it to work.)

Ah, the ignorance of youth. This is so much fun listening to the future of America and their skewed view of the world. We can beat the pipe thing til we're blue in the face, so I will not even touch on that subject anymore. Onto bigger and better things, like the alleged marks on the "homey's" wrist and ankles. Bottom line, don't resist when a police officer is trying to take you into custody. Your "homey" must've been a real piece of work to try and resist IVFp for them to hogtie him. 834a of the California Penal Code: If a person has knowledge, or by the exercise of reasonable care, should have knowledge, that he is being arrested by a peace officer, it is the duty of such person to refrain from using force or any weapon to resist such arrest.

IVFP does it again. My homey was arrested and roughed up pretty thoroughly by the IVFP as he was entering the gate of a friends house where he was crashing for the night. He was eventually hog-tied and taken to the IVFP. He had marks on his wrists and ankles from the pig-fuckers. So it is illegal to posess a pipe or bong for tobacco use? So how come head shops like hempwise dont get searched? That shop has tons of bongs and pipes? should the owners shop be raided by the IVFP for having a display case filled with these "illegal" pieces of glass? Get your facts straight! Having a bong or pipe is NOT illegal, provided its use for tobacco, if it has marijuana in the pipe, or marijuana resin, then it is illegal.

What part of possession do you not understand? It is a misdemeanor to possess drug paraphernalia. You don't have to be doing anything with it. Possessing it in your home is a crime. And no, I am not an IVFP member. Finley grand slammed with one out (I was at the game).

Alcohol, if a crime is being committed then the police are allowed to enter a house. however if no crime is being committed, ie a bong on the coffee table then the police need permission from the actual people living in the house or they need a warrant. Thats all im saying, dont disagree and tell IV residents different. PC probable cause only allows an officer to obtain a warrant. Plain View clause also doesnt allow the right for an officer to enter a home. you are not the law you are just there to enforce it but please do it correctly. im sure you are aware of IVFP officers and deputies entering IV residents homes w/o proper permission, blatant disregard to citizens, read the nexus. In my experience, ive had Santiago who finally left IV, Dorsey, Brown, and more enter my home illegally, but i went to court and the case was dropped. The DA tried everything but my PD and i were on top of the trash. BTW "someguy" if you feel mistreated, go into the IVFP and file a complaint, ask for LT Mc Kinney, ask to speak to him privately, and tell him to keep it confidential, file a complaint about any dept or officer that rubbed you the wrong way. its one of your rights. Alcohol sounds like an IVFP member to me. Take a look at how defensive he/she got in that last statement. Calling the IVFP incompetent is not stretching the facts if you know their faces on site and have seen their handy work day in and day out for years. While most citations are warrented it seems that our local police are becoming much more bold in their disregard for basic rights given to the rest of "the people of the State of California". Personally I am tired of being a target for them. To often is I believe they forget that they are paid to protect and serve all of "the people of the State of California", not simply pursuing the citizens that they deem against their political agenda.

Miss Dickel, you really must like misinforming the people of IV. So, tell me, if a cop sees a woman getting the snot beat out of her, do they need the warrant to enter the home? No. I know it's nowhere near the same kind of crime, but it's the same premise. So, for all you people who want to tell the deputies they don't need a warrant when they are trying to gain entry into your home, think again. Get in their way, and you will go to jail. I can't think of one officer in this state that would want to put up his career, salary, retirement over gaining illegal entry into a young college student's home. The men and women of IVFP work hard to uphold a duty to the people of the State of California. So, until you walk one day in their shoes, don't hate. The men and women that put on the beige, blue, black, or whatever color their chosen profession calls put their lives on the line every day, and all you people do is call them Nazis and incompetent? Get a life, please.

Oh, Mr. DICKel, drug paraphernalia is a Health & Safety secton via the State of California. Look up 11364 H&S. As far as the search warrant, you guys are really misinformed. And meathead, an education not filled with partying made me all knowing. In response to getting a misdemeanor for paraphernalia, its a county ordinance. having a smoking pipe is not illegal, if it has illegal drugs in it then it is. you wait for a warrant and under no circumstances let the police in. you didnt break any laws. if they force entry then you call 9-11, breaking and entering, make a big fuss. dont shut your mouth and dont let them push you around. know your rights, be respectful but stand your ground. dont be intimidated. hope everyones doing well talk to yah soon.

No warrant is needed. Plain view is in effect, and it is a misdemeanor to possess drug paraphernalia. An officer has a duty to take action when a misdeameanor is occuring in their presence. Namely, a bong in the window is a crime occuring in their presence. So, no warrant is needed. Perhaps you should purchase a criminal justice text book before sharing your "intimate" knowledge of search and seizure.

Yo so this is why i hate Brownstar so much. Summer 2003, I just move into 6666 Pasado. The second party we have this bitch is all up on my shit, busts in while cheefing and proceeds to confiscate about a grand in glass from me. Took care of that shit. Then later in teh summer I get a call from my roommate. He says that officer Brown is going to call me because she is at our house and she found some herb and vs. Apparently she saw our bong from the street and decided to come in even though the only person home was in the bathroom and obviously could not give consent to enter. So I get the call from her and she says that I better fess up or my other roommate (the only person who was home) is going to jail tonight (they thought that the vs were x). I do the honorable thing and take responsibility. She asks me when I will be home and that she will be waiting for me. I get cuffed and taken to IVFP were I am detained for 2 more hours than necessary because they could not figure out which law I had broken with the valium. They straightened it out and I got a laywer so I paid another 3 grand(including court fees). All money that I have on loans, so I had to borrow mad money from relatives and whatnot. So after that I had a rapport with officer Brown and whenever she busted my house she would ask for me. One time she accused me of selling weed to this guy, and was convinced that I was a huge drug dealer in IV. At the end of the year we had a party and some people lit some fireworks of at the nieghbors, so she naturally comes to our house and proceeds to ticket another of my roommates for two broken bongs, a grinder, and a keef box. He was in his room with the door locked when she came. All he got was paraphanalia but the whole time she was writing the ticket she was hovering above him threating to charge him with arson or some shit relating to the fireworks over at the nieghbors. He actually just went to court for it and got it dropped because she did not show at the hearing, so there maybe hope for you peeps that recieve tickets from that douche. Anyway, thats pretty much why I hate her (theres probably more that I cant remember). She is ruining IV for the wrong people. Do you think that USC or UCLA has this kind of shit?? The cops there actually realize the stupidity of targeting the college drinking parties and target the shady mother fuckers that rob, stab, and molest. They need to reevaluate.

Well guys its awesome that ya'll are speaking up. First off to mike, the situation is like this. The ivfp will ignore your fences, your walls, and even you doors, i know from experience. If they want in they will come in. Gloria's has had many a party where we fenced off the party, they stepped right in claiming that a kid ran away from them into the party. Its a good start though, hear no evil see no evil thing. Also you must file a complaint asap with Diane and let Lt. mc kinney (sp?) know what is going on at the ivfp too. You can also go and talk to officer signa at the ucsb campus police. Yes i did all that, currently i have a citation pending the second court appearance written by non other than sandra brown, first one was dismissed and she surely vowed some vengence, harassment maybe? I think so! now as far as the legislation stuff i graduated, so these new ordinances and "what nots" wont affect me any longer, but for you students i think thats a wonderful idea. Spark that flame mike, get it going, make that change, cuz all they will do is keep harassing students, and so far they get away with it. Morrie, you also need to go to the ivfp and file a complaint with eggie, our case needs some help from all the students who have been mistreated by the ivfp. I have some pictures of the night when Brown and other ivfp were in my front yard shutting the breaker off, emptying the keg, and ruining our front deck. I'll pull those out when i go to court. Lets not just stand by letting these few bad apples change our SB experience, and our future views of the law enforcement. Hope everyone is doing well and are ready for another year of fun, fun, fun, with some studying of course!!!

During graduation weekend there were many parents and families in IV. Brandon, one of our house mates who just graduated bought a keg for a small bbq we had and his friends and the keg was inside our house and deputy Sandra Brown drove by and saw a keg outside from inside our living room and took a brand new keg from us, when we were casuing, no harm, or problems to anyone. i could easily understand if we were herassing people from the street or being destructive but all we were doing was having a graduation bbq for a friend and it was ruined because of the power trip sandra brown has against this town. I am all for safety in this town but that was out of line.

Someone should get a copy of the legislation that grants/limits IVFP activities. There is a bunch of shit that got passed this last year that we should get clear so we know what our right are. For example someone told me that kegs have to be out of "street view". If that is the case we are making a big tarp wall for parties because our fence is small.

Hey Glorias, just wanted to say hi to my neighbors across the street (we live at 6653 sabado) and to add a IVFP complaint. Ok, so i was walking back from food, drunk as fuck, and i knocked off a side mirror on a car, ( i know it was fucked up and im sorry for doing it, but hey i was drunk) the cops saw me and cuffed me and all that and i went to jail for the better part of 16 hours because they were "busy" (it was a holiday weekend). Talking with my public defender the other day i finally got to read my police report. Get this: the cop said that when they tried to show me the piece of mirror i broke off, i "ripped it out of his hands and threw it into a neighboring yard". Now this is completely bullshit and i can only imagine how bad my ass would have been beaten if i did anything close to that. So anyways im doing my court shit now and hopefully it will be dropped after i pay the mirror back. (the DA's are dropping a lot of shit right now because they are overwhelmed with cases). Anyways as soon as my case is done i am drafting a complaint or greivence or whatever you call it to the officer (i will post his name later). This shit pisses me off because he will probably get away with it because the DA's and judges dont believe anything IV kids say and are simultaneously beating off County and IV officers.

Well, as far as parties getting broken up, there was my bday party in march.

Hey friends, we were wondering if anyone has had any run-ins with the IVFP. We know 40zone and the boys at the end of D.P. have had there share of issues regarding the men and women in beige and they have documented that. We need people to post their stories!!! We understand that this harassment has been going on throughout the summer, and it needs to stop. Some of us at GAD have pending court dates, and we are in need of some more documentation of IVFP civil rights violations. People we need you to step up, show your support and Gaucho pride, do it for yourselves as well as for the future IV residents. Post a message with your story and/or email us and we can let you know where to go with it. We are currently working with the SB County Courts Public Defenders Office, so its truly legit. Help us with our civil suit against some of the IVFP deputies. Thanks again for you support, hopefully we all can make a change.

So who is the smart ass that has dared to come onto a college website with his over aged, unintelligent comments. So let me take a stab at it here and see what i can come up with. You are obviously pissed off at the entire college community likely because of your lack of contact with women in college and the overwhelming anxiety associated with far too much beer drinking when you actualy were in school, you know, 20 years ago. Thus existing from the lack of sexual prowess you posses yet your roomates and likely friends possesed but you lacked and were made fun of about for the remainder of your college carreer. So now you are probably an overweight highly overpaid asshole, like an attorny or something, who job consist of going on to college based web sites of those who have done you wrong in years past to post lame ass comments of obviously smarter individuals whop have excelled far past you mentally , socially and emotionaly. To alcohol 101 i am sorry for your hostillity and anger you feel for your fellow man but hey we are all just here for a good time, not to tear down the walls of a social community over the internet, and hey the same asshols that blackballed you from their fraternity and wouldnt let you into their parties dont even live at glorias anymore so why dont you take your pompas ass comments and "good grammar" and shove them up your tight little asshole, hell you may even like it.

Hey you guys i miss you all already. I just wanted to write something meaningful up here for once instead of being bored at work and pissing off Ramesh. First of all i once was an Isla Vista resident who live right across the street from glorias and came to know those cooky crackers quite well....love ya guys. First off to Alcohol 101 i was just curious as to where a man of your obvious talent chose to get his obviously flawed and biased reasearch from. Dont get me wrong im not going to sit here defending all 18 year olds who wanna drink and choose to do it in IV because its easier, you have a point there to some extent but i feel as though you neglect the wholey bigger picture in front of us. What Scott said is exactly on key those who partty in Isla Vista are the exact crowd whom your ill worded and flacidly stated comments are directed toward. In fact i have the backing for this statement. As many of you out there may know i entered myself into a little speech contest not too long back for this very reason i felt obligated to inform those out there of the dangers of this great town i love so much. It are those people who choose to come to this town, drink rape, and drive drunk who are the main threat here. The majority of those who do these awful things are people that come to this town with the false image that you help to promote with your obscure and incorrect views. Just out of curiosity have you ever lived here, have you ever taken the time to go around and meet these so called asshols you speak of so endearingly. My assumption would be no, but then again when you assume things i make an ass out of you. If you would care to look up this speech i speak of with so much vigor you can visit the Lancaster speech tournament website link from the sbcc homepage. I took third in the whole state smartass so i think that backs up my research. So just remember we are not all assholes who seek to rape pillage and plunder, most of these residents are good people that get a bad name, and the overbearing IVFP and assholes like you with narrowminded views on socialistic issus of any controversy are the ones who create that wrap for these good people. Anyone care to contest my view feel free i mean after all thats why we live where we do and if you dont want that right then i guesse you can get the hell out huh?

Well guys i really appreciate all of your kind words. you see 2 years ago when i first got to SB i had a goal, i knew i wanted to turn our front yard into a meeting place where anyone who wanted to relax, kick back, and party could do so without having to "know someone". At Gloria's we dont discriminate, we dont turn away, and we surely dont allow anything to get out of hand. Its a chilled environment where I'm on top of shit. I dont get hammered, i dont get belligerent, i dont let myself loose control because someone needs to be responsible for the guests. I have dealt with the IVFP on numerous occasions, as a matter of fact i think i have received 7 noise ordinance violations, every-time turning the music lower than the time before, but do you think that changed anything? nah, i still got the ticket, but its ok, its an infraction. Before having a big bash, i go to the IVFP, i leave my name and number, i put myself out there, i establish communication with the ones who "serve and protect", do you think that they ever called me to tell me to lower the music? nah, they just run up into the party and write us a ticket. Its so sad, however it needs to stop. The IVFP has gone thru so many different deputies and officers, from the harassment of Officer Santiago, thank god he's gone to our more recent problems with the men/women in beige. I personally received a citation for contributing alcohol to minors written by none other than Sandra Brown. However, this ticket lit a spark and I'm not backing down!!! I need all your help, if anyone has seen, dealt, been involved with any mistreatment by the IVFP please email me, let me know what happened, and ill forward it to my lawyer. yes, i graduated, yes, im leaving IV, but no, i wont allow abuse, no, i wont allow harassment, the guys that are still around for years to come need to realize that what the IVFP are doing is NOT kosher, and UCSB, the county, and the students need to be aware of it. Thank you for your support.

Congratulations Johnny and the rest of the cast and crew at Gloria's (including last year's crew). Many a long night was spent in your company and I can't recall ever having seen any sort of major altercation. It's a shame the police took such a disliking toward you. It's funny, in all my time in IV I never felt my car was safe, I never felt my bike was safe, and on several occasions I knew I wasn't safe but I could always rest-assured that the cops around the town were busting kids who may have open containers. It's a shame that the IVFP seems to think protecting and serving is more about noise ordinances and less about crimes that cause any harm. I saw Gloria's' struggle, I saw the cops lie, I heard the cops state "I'll arrest you" to people who simply asked what the problem was, I watched the cops assault people by ripping their first beer of the night from their hands but I never saw it get the best of you. Keep on trucking no matter what the self-righteous (or fictional like the Boracho Boyz) post. Oh yeah, I am sure Penny would appreciate your warm words, I will pass them on to her.

Whoa Alcohol 101 calm down. I take it when your calling people young punks, your calling me a young punk, cause I'm the only person to adress your last post. But your latest post only confirms your elitist attitude. If you don't like the 21 year old drinking age, get the hell out of the country? Where did that come from? One of the great things about America is our freedom to question laws and authority, and its for this same freedom that our brave soldiers are fighting for over in Iraq. But this isn't about the Iraqi war, this is about people drinkinging Isla Vista. And my previous post had nothing to do with people under the age of 21 drinking, but drinking in Isla Vista in general. As a 21 year old, the drinking age no longer concerns me. My main point was that your posts are aimed at the wrong audience. The patrons at Gloria's aren't driving home, aren't starting fights, aren't raping women, and aren't causing problems. Gloria's represents one of the few places I can go drink in Isla Vista without worrying about randoms starting problems with other people. Gloria's represents a very relaxed, very hospitable atmosphere where you can go not knowing anyone and leave with a couple of new friends. Other parties in Isla Vista are less controlled and present more problems than Gloria's. If your point is that Gloria's caters to the underage audience, well I have a problem with that point as well. Gloria's doesn't cater to an underage audience, it caters to Isla Vista residences. If they are underage, they drink on their own accord, and that is they're decision to make. They know they are breaking the law, and they know what the consequences are. To single Gloria's out as the problem is irresponsible, and especially on this message board, not needed. This board is used by friends and others who have enjoyed the hospitality and atmosphere of Gloria's and wish to thank the staff for the job that they do. Oh, and one more thing in regards to your Why 21? post: I am in no way disputing the reasoning to your claims, but you forgot to add that while states are able to choose their minimum drinking ages, if any state fails to make 21 the minimum age, they lose federal funding in certain areas. Just thought I add that in. P.S. Your also forgot to finish your asshole anectdote. It's "Opinions are like assholes, everybody has one and they all stink." Just wanted to complete that for everyone who may not have heard it.

This watch I got here was first purchased by your great-granddaddy. It was bought during the First World War in a little general store in Knoxville, Tennessee. It was bought by private Doughboy Ernie Coolidge the day he set sail for Paris. It was your great- granddaddy's war watch, made by the first company to ever make wrist watches. You see, up until then, people just carried pocket watches. Your great-granddaddy wore that watch every day he was in the war. Then when he had done his duty, he went home to your great- grandmother, took the watch off his wrist and put it in an ol' coffee can. And in that can it stayed 'til your grandfather Dane Coolidge was called upon by his country to go overseas and fight the Germans once again. This time they called it World War Two. Your great-granddaddy gave it to your granddad for good luck. Unfortunately, Dane's luck wasn't as good as his old man's. Your granddad was a Marine and he was killed with all the other Marines at the battle of Wake Island. Your granddad was facing death and he knew it. None of those boys had any illusions about ever leavin' that island alive. So three days before the Japanese took the island, your 22-year old grandfather asked a gunner on an Air Force transport named Winocki, a man he had never met before in his life, to deliver to his infant son, who he had never seen in the flesh, his gold watch. Three days later, your grandfather was dead. But Winocki kept his word. After the war was over, he paid a visit to your grandmother, delivering to your infant father, his Dad's gold watch. This watch. This watch was on your Daddy's wrist when he was shot down over Hanoi. He was captured and put in a Vietnamese prison camp. Now he knew if the gooks ever saw the watch it's be confiscated. The way your Daddy looked at it, that watch was your birthright. And he'd be damned if and slopeheads were gonna put their greasy yella hands on his boy's birthright. So he hid it in the one place he knew he could hide somethin'. His ass. Five long years, he wore this watch up his ass. Then when he died of disentary, he gave me the watch. I hid with uncomfortable hunk of metal up my ass for two years. Then, after seven years, I was sent home to my family. And now, little man, I give the watch to you.

Why 21?
4:13 PM
June 14, 2004
Why 21? What's Magic About the Number 21? Are you wondering what the deal is with the 21 minimum drinking age law? Sure, it's a law but it doesn't always feel like it. It's in all 50 states but do people pay attention to it? You might question why the laws were written with 21 as the minimum drinking age, what's so special about that age, and how the law came to be. Here's a lowdown on the most relevant information. A Walk Down Memory Lane Some folks think 21 was pulled out of the air. But despite what you may think, there are some pretty good reasons that age 21 was selected. Back in the late 1960's and early 70's a number of states lowered their drinking age from 21 to 18. In many of these states, research documented a significant increase in highway deaths of the teens affected by these laws. So, in the early 1980's a movement began to raise the drinking age back to 21. After the law changed back to 21, many of the states were monitored to check the difference in highway fatalities. Researchers found that teenage deaths in fatal car crashes dropped considerably - in some cases up to 28% - when the laws were moved back to 21. Like it or not, it is clear that more young people were killed on the highways when the drinking age was 18. Back in 1982 when the many of the states had minimum drinking ages of 18, 55% of all fatal crashes involving youth drivers involved alcohol. Since then, the alcohol-related traffic fatality rate has been cut in half! Research estimates that from 1975-1997 more than 17,000 lives have been saved. Hard to argue with that! A Strain in the Brain According to the book Buzzed, the use of alcohol by young people is especially frightening. We all hear about the dangers and consequences of underage drinking, but most of us know very little about how alcohol affects on the brains of young people. Buzzed says we should look at what we do know about young brains like the fact that they don't finish developing until a person is around twenty years old. And one of the last regions to mature is intimately involved with the ability to plan and make complex judgments. Young brains are built to acquire new memories and are "built to learn." Buzzed reports that, "It is no accident that people are educated in our society during their early years, when they have more capacity for memory and learning. However, with this added memory capacity may come additional risks associated with the use of alcohol." Apparently on studies using animals, young brains are vulnerable to dangerous effects of alcohol, especially on learning and memory function. If this is true of people, then young people who drink may be "powerfully impairing the brain functions on which they rely so heavily for learning." So, in case there wasn't enough pressure to perform at school, at your job, or just in life, alcohol can prevent your use of your own brain. So in answer to the question "Why?" the 21 minimum age drinking laws were established to save your brain and your life. Sources: Kuhn, Cynthia, Swartzwelder, Scott, and Wilson, Wilkie. Did you know... High school students who drank before the age of 13 years were highest for Hispanics at 33.7 percent, followed by "other" at 29.5 percent. The lowest percentage was for African Americans (28.2 percent) and Caucasian Americans (28.4 percent). (CDC, 2001) A recent study reflected 14.7 percent of Caucasian high school students drove after drinking alcohol, compared to 13.1 percent for Hispanic and 7.7 percent for African Americans. (CDC, 2001) In a recent survey, Hispanic students (38.3 percent) were significantly more likely than Caucasian students (30.2 percent) to have ridden with a driver who had been drinking alcohol. (CDC, 2001) Parents' drinking behavior and favorable attitudes about drinking have been positively associated with adolescents' initiating and continuing drinking. (NIAAA, 1997) Youth who drink before age 15 are four times more likely to develop alcohol dependence than those who begin drinking at age 21. (NIAAA, 1997) About 91 percent of all drinks consumed by teenagers are consumed by those who drink heavily. (Biglan, et al, 2003) Access to an unlimited amount of alcohol for a flat fee increases the number of drinks in a sitting by 1.6 drinks on average. (Powell, Williams, and Wechsler, 2002) Six percent of college have been diagnosed as alcohol dependent and nearly one-third of students who be given an alcohol abuse diagnosis under psychiatric criteria. Forty-four percent of students reported at least one symptom of either abuse or dependence. (Knight, et al, 2002) Each additional drink consumed by college students per occasion increased the probability of missing a class by 8 percent and getting behind in school by 5 percent. (Williams, Powell, and Wechsler, 2002) Each additional drink consumed by college students per occasion increased the probability of missing a class by 8 percent and getting behind in school by 5 percent. (Williams, Powell, and Wechsler, 2002) Drinking reduces the number of hours spent studying per day among college students. Each additional drink per occasion is associated with fifteen minutes less studying per day. (Williams, Powell, and Wechsler, 2002) As a result of their drinking, about 25 percent of college students report academic consequences, 11 percent report they have damaged property under the influence of alcohol, and 5 percent are involved with police or campus security. (NIAAA, 2002) An early age of drinking onset is associated with alcohol-related violence not only among persons under age 21 but among adults as well. (Hingson et al, 2001) The total cost attributable to the consequences of underage drinking was more than $53 billion per year in 1998 dollars. (Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation, 1999) In 2002, 29 percent of 15- to 20-year-old drivers killed in motor vehicle crashes had been drinking. Twenty-four percent were intoxicated. (NHTSA, 2003) Research continues to show that young drivers between 15 and 20 years old are more often involved in alcohol-related crashes than any other comparable age group. Alcohol-crash involvement rates, share of the alcohol-crash problem and alcohol-crash risk all reach their peaks with young drivers, with the peaks for fatal crashes occurring at age 21. (NHTSA, 2001) In 2002, 27 percent of the young male drivers involved in fatal crashes had been drinking at the time of the crash, compared with 11 percent of the young female drivers involved in fatal crashes. (NHTSA, 2003) Based on the latest mortality data available, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for people from 15 to 20 years old. (NHTSA, 2003) Sixty-nine percent of young drivers (15-20 years old) of passenger vehicles involved in fatal crashes who had been drinking were unrestrained. Of the young drivers who had been drinking and were killed, 77 percent were unrestrained. (NHTSA, 2003) Teenagers are not well informed about alcohol's effects. Nearly one-third of teens mistakenly believe that a 12-ounce can of beer contains less alcohol than a standard shot of distilled sprits. (American Academy of Pediatrics, 1998) Students who attended schools with high rates of heavy drinking experienced a greater number of secondhand effects, including disruption of sleep or studies; property damage; and verbal, physical, or sexual violence. (Wechsler et al, 2002) A College Alcohol Survey of four colleges indicated that binge-drinking levels are associated with ease of access to alcohol, price, special promotions, and outlet density in college communities. (Wechsler et al, 2002) Binge drinking has been defined as at least five drinks in a row for men and four drinks in a row for women. (Wechsler et al, 2002) High school binge drinking is a major predictor of binge drinking in college. (Wechsler et al, 2002) In 2001, approximately 44 percent of college students reported binge drinking, according to a college survey. This percentage is almost identical to rates in three previous surveys. (Wechsler et al, 2002) The median age at which children begin drinking is 15.7 years old. (SAMHSA, 2003) Findings from four studies have quantified the crash risk associated with teenage drivers transporting teenage passengers. Collectively, these studies indicate that the presence of passengers strongly increases crash risk for teenage drivers; the more passengers the greater the risk. (Williams, December 2001) Fifty-four percent of teenage motor vehicle deaths in 2000 occurred on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. (IIHS, 2002) The highest prevalence of both binge and heavy drinking in 2001 was for young adults aged 18 to 25, with the peak rate occurring at age 21. The rate of binge drinking was 38.7 percent for young adults and 48.2 percent at age 21. (SAMHSA, 2001) More than 1 in 10 Americans aged 12 or older in 2001 (25.1 million persons) drove under the influence of alcohol at least once in the 12 months prior to the interview. Among young adults aged 18 to 25 years, 22.8 percent drove under the influence of alcohol. (SAMHSA, 2001) Approximately one fifth (20.5 percent) of persons aged 12 or older participated in binge drinking at least once in the 30 days prior to an alcohol use survey. (SAMHSA, 2001) Approximately one fifth (20.5 percent) of persons aged 12 or older participated in binge drinking at least once in the 30 days prior to an alcohol use survey. (SAMHSA, 2001) About 10.1 million people age 12 to 20 years reported current use of alcohol in 2001 - 28.5 percent of this age group for whom alcohol is an illicit substance. Of these, nearly 6.8 million or 19 percent were binge drinkers and 2.1 million or 6 percent were heavy drinkers. (SAMHSA, 2001) Underage drinkers are responsible for almost 20% of all alcohol consumed in the United States, with $22.5 billion spent on alcohol in 1999. (Foster, et al, JAMA, 2003) Each year, college students spend approximately $5.5 billion on alcohol- more than they spend on soft drinks, milk, juice, tea, coffee and books combined. (Drug Strategies, 1999) More than 40 percent of individuals who start drinking before the age of 13 will develop alcohol abuse or alcohol dependence at some point in their lives. (Grant, B.F et al, 1997) The highest prevalence of both binge and heavy drinking in 2000 was for young adults aged 18 to 25, with the peak rate occurring at age 21. (SAMHSA, 2000)

See, the problem with you young punks is that you feel your opinion is alway correct. Opinions are like assholes. Everybody's got one. I'm not against people consumnig alcohol. People should just do it when they are legally able to do so. That would mean at the age of 21. If you don't like the legal drinking age in the U.S., then get the hell out of the country.

Hey alcohol 101, I'm all for more education about alcohol abuse and awareness, but you need to get off your elitist high horse. If college is not the place to experiment with alcohol and drugs, then where is? High School? Elementary school? I know your probably going to say you shouldn't do either at all, but take a look around you. Isla Vista is known as a party scene, because it is one. People drink. People do drugs. And talking about it on a messageboard used by a group of friends and well wishers is probably not the greatest forum for your cause. Not to mention that Gloria's provided a safe environment in which to drink, a claim that most other places in IV can't claim.

http://dailynexus.com/news/2004/7713.html To Morrie, your own newspaper the Daily Nexus states an increase in crime rates. Where do you get your information from? Perhaps you should research your facts before talking a bunch of shit. Alcohol should be consumed leagally by those 21 and over. That is the law. If people in Isla Vista have a problem with that, they they will pay the consequences. Bottom line, I'm tired of seeing young people hurt, raped, and killed because of alcohol. There's no need for it. College is not a place to experiment with alcohol and drugs. It is an institution of higher learning so you can lead the people of tomorrow into better things. Not lead them into a burial plot.

LOL Morrie your the man! Love the response to alcohol 101. As adults we need to learn about alcohol and know what the affects are. College allows 4 or more years of experimenting with alcohol, drugs, and sex. We then make our OWN decisions whether to drink or not. As U.S. citizens at 18 we have the right to vote, we can get drafted to war, but we can't buy a beer, huh? Why does America have such a high number of alcoholic abuse or related crimes? In Europe the legal age is 18 to drink, and there isn't such a high rate of alcohol problems. I too sympathize with Mr. Alcohol 101, however why dont we learn how NOT to abuse it rather than try and bust people who are drinking responsibly at a college weekend party??

In response to alcohol 101's post, I have lived in Isla Vista for 3 years now, and first off you are completely wrong on your sexist views that my main goal for the evening is to get women drunk to rape them...? I cant believe your comment, and thats what you think many male isla vistans goal is for the evening, also, you are ill-informed and if you went to the IVFP office you would notice there is a dramatic decrease of crime in isla vista, so you are wrong again there, if you dont believe me.. go see the stats yourself. Of course i would feel horrible if my sister got raped, but that can happen anywhere, and all i can do is hope that people are responsible drinkers, and not all rapists like you have labled everyone in isla vista to be. Alcohol will ALWAYS be associated to the college scene, especially to us who live in IV, so please be responsible and respectful, and not assume everyone is a rapist, because alcohol 101 really does not know there ass from a whole in the ground.

Kick back and relax with friends, so they can get women so shit faced they don't know who raped them that night. Alcohol is a drug that has increased the rate of sexual assaults on unsuspecting women who have had one too many drinks. Think about it. How would you feel if your sister or even your mother was raped after she had too much too drink. Youth of today just don't realize they ramifications of drinking too much alcohol at a young age. My aunt was killed by a 19 year old drunk driver. How did the 19 year old get the alcohol you might ask? From a college kegger party, of course.

Oh my God. Who is this person saying these slanderous things about me and my wonderful party? Is this person implying that I am a fruit loop, that I crave men's genitals, that I enjoy being a catcher, that I crave a man's hairy body, that I think Fabio is a God, that I enjoy the feel of a man's body next to mine? How dare he say these things? I am not a butt pirate? I am not... I am not... I am... I... Oh hell, who am I trying to fool? I might as well come out of the closet! I am gay and proud of it. Do you here that IV? I'm queer, I'm here, get used to it! Oh, that feels so much better. Thank you for releasing me from the bonds of society. It's good to know that I have IV's support!

Man, what kind of idiot wears sunglasses in the middle of the night? That is so fucking lame. Are the street lights too sensitive for your beady little eyes? Or do you want them hidden so that the men don't feel you staring at their asses? God, the dudes would love you in prison. Prime piece of ass. I'd make you my dog's bitch.

Hey Dickel. Are you really that silly or just like too many Dickels in your mouth. Your sorry excuse for a party is pretty sad. Does the term greaseball mean anything to you? Perhaps you should shave and relocate to West Hollywood where you would feel much more at home.

I myself LOVE Gloria's After Dark, as a middle-aged cop with a stick up my ass, it's a great environment for me to bust up parties and tell the students that I get PROMOTED after each one! It's the best environment ever for the IVFP! Thanks for the great year.

I would have to agree on that, Sabado is the best street in IV. You dont have the insanity of D.P. Yet we can still party like rockstars.

i recently saw the documentary "don't bank on Amerika" (and yes, spelled AmeriKa on purpose), and there was a striking similarity to the IV of today. Basically, even though we WILL TRY to work with the police, so that things run smoothly, they STILL fuck us over. What that leads to........student anger....anger that builds up.......anger that eventually splits the students from wanting any relation with those who have been hired to "protect" them.........and anger that then can only be expressed through violence. IV riots 2005? Anyhow, I'm getting mad just writing this. Main point being, things are going to have to change. College only happens once, we work our asses off in order to succeed in this cruel world - we deserve some fun and reward along the way. Police like to say that when they're out patrolling our streets, they're not "trying to ruin our fun." Well guess what YOU ARE

Hey guys, if anyone wants to help get a petition started trying to get IVFP to communicate better with the students, letting them/us all know what is "legal" and/or not legal when it comes to partying in IV email us. This situation needs to cease, we as students must stand up for ourselves, not let the IVFP whom we all financially support, take advantage of our naiveness. They tell us not to have kegs visible, but they then intrude parties and take them. If you or you know someone who has had issues like this, or run ins that might not be so kosher, email us. Lets get together on this!!

yeah, so say there were tarps hanging down from ropes blocking the view of the driveway (from both Sabado and Trigo)along with tarps around the front porch (like you guys did have) would the crackdown have been avoided? I didn't see it, but it sounds like all that happened was the cops saw somebody drinking that "looked" underage. Furthermore, not only would blocking the view in from the streets perhaps prevent the cops from seeing people drinking, but it would also make it a "private" party - and technically not allowing their admittance without consent. I dunno, just a suggestion. But I'm feeling you guys. The cops are just so DAMN frusturating. They don't solve problems, they just create them! FUCK
We had tarps that covered both driveway entrances at the very first big party, but since we had a few other parties without problems, we thought we could manage without them. Not only that, according to foot patrol, all we had to do was make sure the keg was not visible from the street, which it clearly was. But of course, if they really want to break up a party, they will find ways to do it even if we tarped both entrances. They would then probably just come through the walkways. It really seemed planned out to me simply because they came by real early (10:45pm) before there was even much of a crowd and made sure they were going to take all our kegs before anyone drinks it and stop our party....but they didn't succeed! But tarping both entrances might have helped, who knows? -Staff

Hey guys, I was doing some searches of old addresses and came up with your site. I lived at ”Glorias” (I guess she still owns the place?) from 85-88. We had some ragers in the parking lot, including bands and booze aplenty. Looks like you guys have taken it to a whole new level though. Glad to see the place is in good hands! I’ll see if I can find some old pictures and get them to you for some “retro” highlights. That place was the best three years I can’t remember! And don’t despair, I’m now a successful attorney with my own firm, so forget that “beer kills brain cells” crap. Next time I’m in town on a Friday I’ll drop by with some cold ones for the “next generation”. Go Gauchos!

Hey guys last night was definitely an interesting night. Our pre-graduation party was interuppted at 10:30 pm by IVFP Deputy Sandra Brown and her Crew. After approaching several guests at the Extravenganza, Brown found what she was looking for, an excuse to shut us down for the night. Apparently a student was holding a cup of beer and was not 21. Sandra Brown then decided to take 4 kegs and a tap, "for evidence". The party did continue, Gloria's didn't allow the IVFP to spoil its Pre-Graduation Extravegaza. We partied late, had a blast and it was a success. Thank you to all who showed up, next step is Graduation!!!

Well as im sure ya'll know graduation is near, and we at Gloria'a want to celebrate!!! Oh... Yeah! Gloria's is hosting our' Pre-Graduation Extravaganza and its coming up in less than a week. For the graduates, their guests and GAD suppoters, we at Gloria's are gonna use our After Dark portion as a VIP lounge. This will allow easier access to the bar with shorter lines, and of course its' exclusivity. Many have asked how they can get involved. Check out the pre-grad party info page and/or email us. Let us know that you want to be included. Congrads!!! - Johnny D

cool party you guys had - steam machine and all. that property is a score for big parties (as in that whole parking/driveway area, under that huge tree). How about throwing some crazy theme parties - or just putting a giant stripper pole right in the middle of the dance area. haha, just tossing out ideas. rock on
Yes, Gloria's is prime location, glad we were able to make your night a blast. We would love to hear your ideas, let us know what your thinking and lets see if we can get it going. Gloria's is going to host a pre-graduation party in May check out the details. - staff
